Stylescape & Timeline

A style-scape was compiled to illustrate the brainstorming process (or the direction the project will take) featuring typography, color palette, logos, style, and symbolism.

The timeline for this project was to be designed and produced by September of 2020. The research and mock-ups were assigned and completed in June, with the rest of the time allotted to production.

Inspiration & Motifs

During the research process, I wanted to embody a change that can relate to everyone in terms of seeking a new beginning that goes beyond stereotypes. A lotus flower and shield were to be the main backbone of the design that is symbolic. A vector design would be the main form of illustration derived from multiple sources of inspiration.

A lotus flower, which is often symbolized as a new beginning, purity, and spiritual enlightenment within many cultures, thus incorporating countless persons. A shield design can communicate stability, protection, longevity, tradition, solidity, toughness, boldness, confidence, no retreat, no surrender. The University of Colorado can provide resources manifest these values and propel students to a future of success.

The vector art took inspiration from the Prime Original, "The Americans". The heroic stance provided a stern outlook of crossing a generational threshold. Hats and diplomas were featured to implement a scholarly representation.

Mock-Ups

During this phase, multiple renditions were created and submitted for the committee to peer review the prototypes.

Eventually, the strongest elements from each design were combined to create a superior visual representation (in other words, a hybrid).

Final Design Iteration

After further review, certain changes were to be made to make the pin more gender inclusive or neutral. In order to keep the visual aesthetic scholarly and simplistic (for production means), the figures were ultimately replaced with a graduation cap and crossed diplomas.

Insights Gained

Through this project, I began to understand the fundamentals of communication and diversity that are crucial to the university's identity. The pin's design aims to tell a story and encapsulate the university's stylization.

Once the final design was approved, the file was saved as a jpeg and SVG. The packaged items were then sent to Victory Sales Inc. to be physically produced with intact organic design elements.
